Diabetes Q & A

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic health condition that causes your blood sugar levels to be higher than normal. The sugar (glucose) in your blood comes from the food you eat and is your body’s preferred source of energy. Insulin, a hormone made in your pancreas, helps get the sugar from your blood into your cells.

If you have diabetes, either you don’t make enough insulin, referred to as Type 1 diabetes, or your body isn’t properly using the insulin you do make, referred to as Type 2 diabetes. Some women also develop diabetes during their pregnancy, which is referred to as gestational diabetes.

How do I know if I have diabetes?

Ms. Ware and her team at Alpha Health & Wellness, DPC, can determine if you have diabetes from a blood test. There are several tests she can offer to diagnose or assess risk including:

Glycated hemoglobin test (A1C)

The A1C test is a blood test that averages blood sugar level over a two to three month period. An A1C level of 6.5 or higher on two separate occasions indicates diabetes.

Random blood glucose test

A random blood glucose test measures blood sugar level at a random time. If your blood sugar is 200 mg/dL or greater, you may have diabetes.

Fasting blood glucose test

A fasting blood glucose test checks your blood sugar levels after an overnight fast. If your blood sugar is 100 mg/dL or higher on two separate tests, you have diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes, which is more common, doesn’t usually develop without a diet high in starch, sugar and sweets, processed food, with being overweight and obesity. Making your health a priority by getting your annual physical at Alpha Health & Wellness, DPC, and following the recommended lifestyle changes before they affect your health may help prevent you from developing diabetes.
