Stress Management Q & A

What is stress?

Stress is often defined as a mental or emotional strain or tension that results from adverse or demanding situations. Stress may be divided into three categories:

Acute stress

Often referred to as the fight-or-flight response, acute stress causes your body to release a cascade of hormones to protect you from injury. The metabolic changes caused by acute stress may last up to 90 minutes.

Chronic stress

Chronic stress includes all the issues you face from your job, family, or life demands. You may have a tendency to ignore or push chronic stress aside, but this type of stress can affect your overall health.

Eustress

Not all stress is bad. Eustress refers to the positive stress you feel on your wedding day, graduation, or getting a promotion.

While not all stress is bad, you may tend to pay more attention to the negative stress than the positive.

Is stress bad for my health?

High levels of chronic stress can wreak havoc on both your physical and emotional health. Common health issues related to stress include:

  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Chest pain
  • Stomach upset
  • Sleeplessness
  • Muscle pain and tension

Stress can also lead to emotional and mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression. It can also affect behavior and make you quick to anger or cause you to withdraw from your circle of friends. You may also turn to unhealthy solutions --  such as alcohol, food, or drugs -- to manage your stress, and this can affect your physical health.
